THE ORDER OF THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER: TODAY, TOMORROW, AND YESTERYEAR!!!!!

The Order of The Star Spangled Banner was a secret society formed in New York City in 1849 created by Charles Allen for the purpose of protesting the rise of Irish Catholic and German Immigration into the United States.

The requirements for admission were that one had to be a male and posessed 21 years of life, a member of the Protestant Church, and willing to obey the OSSB's stipulations WITH NO QUESTIONS!!!!

Of course, the nativists were the majority in the OSSB because they were opposed to all types of immigration. The OSSB eventually became the cornerstone of the nativist American Party, also known as the Know-Nothing Party. This name was derived from the secretiveness of the party.

Members of the Order were agitated for rigid restrictions on immigration and naturalization and for laws authorizing the deportation of "alien" paupers. They also promoted a literature of exposure, much of it pure fiction.
