Nativism and its effects in the 1920's

Perhaps the most important factor in American life in the 1920's involved the restriction of Southern and Eastern European immigrants.

This is an example of NATIVISM at its finest.

And also this!!!!!!!!

Acts and Groups Supporting Nativism

Nativism was supported by many different groups. The Ku Klux Klan, which was founded during reconstruction, was awakened and they reached 4.5 million members. They also lashed out against new groups, such as immigrants. The surge of immigrants created a hostile atmosphere and a dramatic increase in such nativism. The Emergency Quota Act of 1921 restricted immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. The National Origins Act of 1924 prohibited asian immigrants and further reduced Southern and Eastern European immigrants. One major nativism movement was the Immigration restriction league in the early 20th century, which then led to the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the Gentlemens Agreement in Japan. This was the result of the fear that new incomers would flood the labor market, and drive unemployment up among U.S. Citizens, along with the allegations that new immigrants would form crime organizations, and traffick drugs.

The Fears of Nativists

Nativism has many valid points. New immigrants many times take jobs in their community, jobs which could be taken by natural citizens. They also create their own kinds of communities, such as Chinatown. This tends to isolate them from the rest of America, and slows down the integration process. It also prevents them from learning the language quicker as well. Finally, immigrants also rely heavily on the welfare system when they first arrive, putting pressure on the entire system. Politicians use these reasons to accuse them of being the problems of American society, trnasforming them into a scapegoat for everything, just as Hitler did with the Jews. The Italian Mafia is an example of a ethnic minority that participates in illegal activities, such as racketeering. Al Capone was the most famous leader of the mafia. Ever.
